Posted on 12. Oct, 2009 by Waheed Akhtar in All Articles, Resources

Have you ever thought what happen if you lose your job tomorrow? Or your company closes due to some reason? The situation could be anything. Many have faced this problem in last few months. What should be your option to handle this situation? Do you know about Freelance Work Websites and Resources where you could survive in this situation?

Today I am gonna share Freelance Work Websites and Freelance Resources with SmashingShare readers, which they could visit when the time goes wrong. Also I am gonna share my latest experience here with you people about freelancing.

!! Recession !!

Yes recession hit hard the booming city “Dubai” (where I live and work) and my company (where i used to work 9 to 6) was also affected by this. I lost my job in September 2008.

How I survived in Recession?

I never knew about Freelance Work Websites and Resources before September 2008. I came to know about 99designs through one of my friend. After losing my job, dedicated myself to this great Freelance Work Marketplace. I never knew this would help me like hell. I won 15 contest on 99designs in just 7 months only and there was also some big amount prizes included in this list. You can see my profile here on 99designs. I was able to survive in such an expensive city (Dubai) without any job for seven to eight months. Thanks to God and 99designs

There are a lot of other Freelance Work Websites and Resources but never tried any of them excpet 99designs and CrowdSpring.

I would suggest all designers (specially who are new to this niche) to experiement 99designs once. I have enjoyed been there and had good experience. If you have passion and creativity, you would never be disappointed.

Don’t forget to leave your comments what you liked and what not. Also you might be interested to Be the first to know the latest happenings at SmashingShare.

I’d like to add http://www.myzoox.com to the list. It is the only one on the list that has all the features of one of the top tier ones on the list (only a few of them are top tier in my opinion), and allows you to freelance ANY service imaginable, not just IT & biz consulting. Not to mention it has arguably the best design :)

Most of these sites are horrible for real freelancers. The bidding sites like getafreelancer have “clients” who post full blown website with a budget of $200 and kids who bid on it for $50. Not worth my time IMO.

I agree with Amber. Most of these sites are worthless. They should never replace roll-up-your-sleeves networking. Be creative. Get the gig. Rely on another site, and you’re in trouble.

@Amber and @Carey
I agree with you both but do you think the beginners or who don’t have enough experience, compete on those other top sites?
Never forget our beginner designers community. You might never visit these bidding sites but there are a lot of beginners who just want to experience with freelancing.
Thanks for your comments.

iFreelance is horrible. It’s fully of “clients” who want everything for nothing. It’s not unusual to have people on there who want a full corporate identity package, including an e-commerce website for UNDER 500 dollars.

I don’t know about these other sites, but iFreelance really left a bad taste in my mouth for the whole online freelancing thing.

I just noticed other people have just said the exact same thing as I have, but it definitely bears repeating.

@aravind and @Vincent
Every website get visitors who have positive and negative points for it. For example, I have experienced 99designs and found it very good. In the same time, there were some people who did not like 99designs at all and they have negative thoughts for 99designs.
Thanks for your feedback.

As most of the people said here, this list is not quite useful for professional designers. any how the author spent on some time to list them all and felt good based on his experience.
I rather recommend all the designers to go for ‘no-spec’ design where you get paid really what you worked for. these freelance sites’ clients are horrible and they waste most designer’s time. Bad for the market. Pity on the contestants.

Really nice article. We are in the process of building a new B2B auctions site. The site will have products as well as project auctions. We try to keep it strictly for professionals. It is currently just in Beta stage so any comment will be most wellcomed.

And I have too agree, this type of process results in the lowest common type of design. Now, there is a place for it but not in my portfolio.
