We have a “dedicated” office in the basement where we work when we can’t be interrupted. We also use our office on the main level when we’re trying to get stuff done, but we’ may also be keeping an eye on the kids.

I have had a home office for over a decade now. Two kids that I also homeschool and I manage a guide service. Home life and work life are intertwined with me and I am often caught folding laundry as I discuss backpacking trips with folks. Most email communication is just a few minutes as I turn my attention many different ways all day long. More concentrated tasks are done when I can be away from family life such as in the late evening. This quiets not only kids, but phone calls and email as well. I’m fortunate that the design of my house allows for an office near the front door, so those arriving for meetings here are not privy to the activity (or clutter) of the rest of the household. The kids are trained in courtesy while I am on phone calls and most people say my kids speak in a more mature manner since they are around a functioning business all day. It’s all craziness, but it works and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I know MANY people who live this way as well.
