Part of being a freelancer means being your own business development department, and going out and pursuing fresh clients. This is true for freelancers just getting started and for those who have been freelancing for a couple of years.

There’s always a need to secure new business because, you never know when a steady client is going to pull the plug on your services.

To stay “in the black” here are four tips for generating more freelance work:

1. Communicate With Current Clients

Many times you’ll only be working on one aspect of a client’s design work — for example, print marketing. Be sure your current client knows about all of your capabilities and services. They may need web design or a new logo, and if you communicate your valuable skills in other areas it could double your workflow from that client. Many designers work in tandem with freelance copywriters, illustrators and photographers: if this is the case, offer access to these related creative services to clients as well.

2. Put The Word Out

Name an industry that doesn’t need a graphic designer? It’s a trick question. Every type of business can benefit from a brochure, corporate identity overhaul, web design and other services. To get more work you need to be ready to sell your services at any time. Always let people know that you are taking on new projects. Tell friends, family and acquaintances, because word of mouth could get you your next project.

3. Print Business Cards And Keep Them Handy

A business card is necessary, especially for graphic designers. The business card can literally communicate your aesthetics and design sensibility to potential clients. You know that mantra of “Phone? Check. Keys? Check. Wallet? Check,” that you do each time you leave the house? Add business cards to that list. Get a card case or carry the cards in your wallet and everywhere you go. Your next client could be just around the corner.

4. Branch Out And Network

The home office routine can get pretty stagnant. It helps to get out, meet colleagues and potential clients, and learn what’s happening in your niche and in other industries. Try working at a co-working space, where you’ll be able to network with designers and freelance writers, marketers and web developers. Find out if your local chamber of commerce has networking events and attend those with your business cards in hand. Finally, sign up for graphic design conferences to meet other creatives and to increase your skills and value to potential clients.

Freelancing can be a lucrative way to earn money while perfecting your craft. Freelancers earn money by working on a contractual basis for clients or companies that pay according to specific projects, rather than a regular salary. Freelancing can be a very profitable endeavor for the “artist” who is able to secure regular clients and keep the cash flowing. However, many freelancers struggle due to the lack of exposure they receive. Many companies are not aware of where to find good freelancers and how to bid for their services. Creating a good website is an effective way to market your services and connect with clients who want to take advantage of your expertise.

A great deal of freelancers are not aware of how a website can help them secure new projects. Graphic artists, writers, IT specialists and actors all benefit from a well-designed, information-rich website. Websites are the best way to reach a diverse audience of available clients, while showcasing your work and outlining your rates and policies.

Offtopic:
Do you know about freelance websites where you can start your career as designer or developer today.

Create a Budget

The first consideration in creating an effective website is to develop a working budget for the site. The most important factor in your budget is to find cheap web hosting services. The provider will house your site, and provide you with the bandwidth needed to maintain your graphics and files on the server. Finding an affordable web hosting provider is imperative, because many companies charge outrageous fees that eat into your marketing budget.

Secondly, figure out whether you will design the site yourself or hire a designer to create a site for you. Many freelancers, especially those in the graphic and web design fields, save money by developing their own site design. This is a good option to cut down on cost. Freelancers who are not skilled in web design can search for site providers that provide user-friendly templates.

Gather Your Content

The second step is to decide what content you will feature on your site. Although it is tempting to add all of your work samples to the site, consider that your reader will probably not have time to review all of your work. In addition, large amounts of files take up bandwidth on your site and can cause your page to load slowly. Choose a few of your best samples, along with short testimonials from past clients, if available.

Avoid flashy graphics that some of your potential clients may not be able to load on their computers. Keeping your design simple, easy to navigate and user-friendly is key to creating a great website.

Elements To Include

The first thing you need to include on your site (besides your work samples) is information on yourself and your areas of specialty. This is especially important if you’re targeting a niche market, such as finance, medical fields, or education. A writer who only produces technical manuals, for example, should include that as an area of expertise on their main page, to effectively target those clients. This will also save the freelancer from fielding a lot of calls and emails from clients that are not a good fit.

Include detailed contact information on every page of your site. This should include an email contact, phone number and address, if applicable. Many freelancers fail to include contact information, or bury it in an obscure place on their site. This is a mistake. Your contact information should be prominently displayed on every page.

Add links to your site. For artists with published work, adding links adds credibility to your business and increases your chances of landing clients. Additionally, ask clients who have used your services to create a link on their page that points to your site. This will go a long way in making your site visible to a large number of potential clients.

Creating a website is a valuable marketing tool for freelancers and can lead to more projects and land you more high-profile clients. Finding an affordable web hosting provider, making your site user-friendly, and marketing your site goes a long way in landing those prime assignments.

A lot of people these days who are freelancers also have blogs that contain helpful articles. It is not uncommon that a freelancer might end up talking to readers via email or some other medium about solving some issue about a blog.

The problem is that some of this is taken for granted. Of course, there are cases where previous clients ask about a bug from a design that came up, but for new clients, what is acceptable to be considered a freebie? Should a freelancer spend their time solving a site issue for free if it was not their coding or design error, even if the client is new?

Here are my thoughts.

If a person wants you to help them fix their site to fix another designer or developer’s code, you probably should be charging them for your time, even if you might be a new freelancer with a minimum hourly flat rate wage. If people truly need their site fixed right, they will pay for it. It is ridiculous to ask you to do something for free because you might never hear back from them again.

It is not an act of faith to do something for another person with hope they may ask you to design for them a whole site later on. As much as you might like to think everyone is good, you cannot be that way. Regardless of how long you have been freelancing, you risk not getting the job when you do these extra freebies.

If you are still not paying your bills, you really have no business offering services for free.

I have talked to a lot of freelancers who have said that they are struggling. However, when I ask them how they conduct business, they offer a lot of extra freebies.

The problem is that living is not cheap. If you have a child, or have a few children, or are married, you have to think logically. You need to pay the bills. The only time you can be frivolous with your time is when you are making enough money to feed yourself, pay your bills, and put a little money in the bank to save for later use.

When Should You Charge:

When you physically have to drive to a consultation. (Gas and time.)

If you are providing phone support outside a web design contract. If so, you need to make sure the caller is aware that they will be billed.

If you are fixing another’s code.

When you are asked to do extra services outside the original contract.

Some people are quick to point out that giving freebies to a regular client is great, but it is not. A lot of times, that client will ask a little bit more each time. It is about protecting yourself in the end.

If you have been a freelancer for many years, what other suggestions do you have for other freelancers who are needing advice on what you should charge?

7 Habits You As A Freelancer Need To Ditch is a post from: Smashing Share | Web Resources, Design Inspiration, Freebies and Tutorials

Freelancers accumulate a lot of things and habits that get in the way of their work. Sure we meet deadlines and get things done but our productivity suffers.

At the end of the day, we’re left scratching our head wondering where the day went. We end up working nights to meet a deadline that should have been met ahead of schedule if things had gone according to plan.

Here are 7 Things You As A Freelancer Need To Ditch in order to find the kind of success you’re looking for in your business.

1. Excessive Social Networking, Instant Messaging And Internet Browsing

This has been written and told so many times that you’d think it would be engraved in people’s head by now. Even if you’re super careful and watch your time, social networking and browsing have a habit of sneaking up on you and making you ignore the clock.

Stop Stumbling, Digging, or going through your RSS reader for an unscheduled period of time. If there’s work on your desk that’s being ignored in favor of it then you’re wasting time and momentum.

2. Email Obsession

Ah yes. We all have the email bug. Here’s how you ditch the habit.

Turn off the notification sound

Shut off your inbox

Check every two hours or any (reasonable) time period of your choice.

Rinse and repeat

You could also check email as a reward. Completed an article? Check email. Met a deadline? Omg, I so deserve to check my email now!

Yes you’ll go crazy, but your work will thank you for it!. Think of the happy clients and stress free pace of work as you’re free from the anxiety of having things added to your to-do list with every email.

3. The “Yes, Right Away” Attitude

A quick clarification: I’m not asking you to ditch the “Yes, I can” attitude. What kind of a freelancer would I be if I told you to ditch the secret behind your success? I’m telling you to ditch the “Yes, right away” attitude. There’s a difference.

As freelancers and web workers, we tend to think that if we don’t act immediately, we’ll lose out. That’s the wrong attitude. Not everything requires your immediate attention.

Prioritize:

Make the distinction between clients who’ll appreciate and reward the quick response and those to whom it wouldn’t make a difference if you replied a few hours later or the next day.

If you’re replying to emails as they come in your inbox, you’ll spend your entire day dealing with them and get no work done. Ever wondered where your day went when you haven’t taken a break all morning?

Nine times out of ten, your day went to your inbox.

4. Information Overload

Sometimes I think ‘freelancer‘ is a synonym for ‘continuous learning‘. We read or at least scan everything that comes in front of our eyes, we bookmark religiously, download e-books like we’re obsessed and research is our middle name.

All this leads to information overload.

I’ll be the first to say that we never know when we’ll need something. However, short circuiting our brain trying to cram everything ruins our work. Not to mention the headache it brings on.

5. Clutter

That desk of yours? It has to be cleaned. Your papers need to be filed, pens need to be set in their holder and you need to pick up the trash. Even your desktop needs to be organized.

And no, dumping everything in your drawer is not called de-cluttering.

Very few people thrive in clutter. Organized chaos is fine but the minute you spend more than 15 seconds looking for something, it’s not organized anymore.

So ditch the clutter and organize.

6. Distractions

Distractions come in many forms. Every freelancer has their own set of distractions. It could be unnecessary phone calls, the neighbor’s noisy dog or even your own children.

Respect your work time and figure out ways to eliminate these distractions. Get a baby sitter for your kids or get them involved in extra-curricular activities. Dealing with your neighbor’s dog could be easy or you may have to be a little uhh… innovative.

Whatever your distractions, they can be eliminated. Turn the force of your “can do” attitude on your distractions and watch them melt away.

7. Extremes

Moderation is the name of the game. Don’t waste your time getting distracted or procrastinating but don’t become obsessed with productivity either.

Set goals and meet them. That’s the definition of a successful and productive day. If you don’t meet them every now and then, it’s ok. It doesn’t mean that you’re going to fail.

What are some of the things that you know you need to ditch to make your day productive?

How To Avoid Being Taken Advantage Of By Clients When Freelancing is a post from: Smashing Share | Web Resources, Design Inspiration, Freebies and Tutorials

It is important that you maintain a professional attitude with your client. However, there are just some clients who believe that just because they paid for your services, you are to spend countless hours beyond the project’s contract.

Freelancers are not like retail store or food service clerks. You do not have to be pushed over and you even have the choice of what projects you will choose to take on.

The Scenario:

You completed a project and your client has been satisfied. However, days or even a week later the client comes back and wants you to add more. In fact, this is more than an hour job. You tell the client that it is outside of the original contract that they had agreed, but they believe you have to add these.

Do You Do It?

Answer – No. You send them a copy of the agreed contract and point out your part of the contract that states anything after the project is a site maintenance fee that they must either pay you by the hour or create a new contract with you if the new project is more than a few edits. This response is in no way rude. It is stating a fact that can even be legal and binding in court.

As a freelancer, your contract is almost a lifesaver when it comes to these issues. While the client might not be happy, you have to feed yourself somehow and all that time does add up. Your contract should include important information like:

Exactly what is to be done with the site?

How long the project should take at the most?

Does the client retain rights to the graphics?

A clause at the end where you state your fees if your service is needed after the project has been closed.

Your time is important. Never let a client run all over you even if you want to be nice. Just being nice does not get you paid.

Have you dealt with a client who has taken advantage of you? Have you learned from the experience?

I’m very happy to present to you my first article here at SmashingShare. In this article I will give you some tips on mistakes you don’t want to make as a freelancer. By following these suggestions you will have a better chance at succeeding.

1. Pretending To Be Someone You’re Not

In the heat of the moment, when you are trying to land a deal with a client, many times it can be tempting to make it sound as if you are a little bit better at certain things than you actually are, – adding a year or two to your working career or skipping to mention that you are going to have a vacation right in the middle of a critical time period for a client. Maybe you’ll get away with it once or twice, but its really not anything you should let yourself do. One thing is that lying is bad, another thing is that in most cases it will probably do you more harm than good. Maybe you will loose a client or two, but as most clients value honesty you will come out better in the long end.

Be honest on what you are capable of doing and not, tell it like it is and set deadlines that you are sure you are able to keep. If you fail a project because you took on too much or did things you don’t really do that well, your client wont be back and it may affect the other clients you currently have. Remember that every client can give you good or bad reputation in the market, so try to get a name out there as someone who’s honest and can be counted on.

2. Overpricing/Underpricing Yourself

Pricing your products/services can be very critical, so its important to do some good researching before you set the prices. Check out what others charge for the same or related services, ask your friends or business-partners, you can even ask potential clients. Depending on which country you work from there may be different forums and websites that can help you out on this. If you price yourself too high the clients will choose your competitors or just get very unhappy when they receive the bill. If you price yourself too low it can be hard for you to make ends meet and the clients may also find it a bit unprofessional. Just remember to do the required research before you start up. And most importantly: don’t be afraid to do adjustments along the way if you feel you started off a bit wrong. My hottest tip on this point will be to keep a close dialogue with the clients and try to get feedback from them after the project has ended.

They are the ones that are responsible for your paycheck and the ones that in the end decide if they want to use your services or not. So make sure to listen to them and value their opinion.

3. Thinking You “Know It All”

This can truly be one of the biggest mistakes you ever make as a freelancer, and probably on many other fields as well. Even if you land a great project, or ten for that matter, that doesn’t mean that you know everything. It’s so important to always have an open mind. This means listening to feedback and using it in a constructive way, evaluating yourself, seeing your own good and bad sides, spending time to read up on news in your field and being humble. Just acknowledge the following: You will never be done learning, so you’d better keep your feet on the ground and always focus on doing your best. That being said it’s also important to remember to be confident and value your good sides.

4. Not Being Specific Enough

There are many things that can go completely wrong if you don’t focus on being specific in your communication with a client. You should always have a set deadline, a price and a good understanding of what the client wants. If you fail on either of these you may be in for negative surprises. To deal with this before it occurs you should have some sort of written contract where all the essential things are mentioned and agreed upon. Depending on what kind of project you are doing you should also have regular meetings or at least phone calls and updates via mail.

This way your client will feel involved and potential misunderstandings can be corrected along the way.

5. Giving The Client Something He/She Doesn’t Want

This is obviously one of the worst things that can ever happen as a freelancer. Though if you follow the other tips you can be pretty sure that this wont happen. Just remember that the client is the one who decides what he/she wants. As long as you make sure to involve your client along the way you will be able to make sure that you stay on track and end up where you want to.

6. Breaking Deadlines

Breaking a deadline doesn’t necessarily have to mean that the whole project will fail. On the other hand you should always aim to plan ahead well enough to not break any deadlines. The way to do this is basically to always make sure that you don’t agree on too short deadlines. I always think it over at least twice before I tell a client when I can have something done for them. And depending on the size of the project I always add a day or two to make sure that I have some time available in case unexpected things happen. Remember that all clients would much rather have a flawless end result that they had to wait a day extra for, compared to getting something that is only half finished. Add some extra time and if you end up delivering the product a day early it will be nothing but a positive surprise.

7. Working 24/7

Being a freelancer you will experience periods that will require more work than others. Just remember that with your brain being one of your clearly most important tools it needs time to recharge. Many new freelancers get overwhelmed with huge workloads early on, only to be completely burned out a month or two later – not being able to work at all for days or even weeks. As much as you would love to dive into all projects at once and work 24/7, you have to be able to hold back a bit on that part. It can be hard to remember this when you feel filled with ideas and energy, but make sure to have enough time to rest up and take care of other aspects of your life besides the work part. In the long run you will be able to produce better quality work and the chance to long term success will be bigger when you remember to take care of yourself.

8. Being Too Gentle On Yourself

Some people mistake freelancing for being something very easy and relaxing. These freelancers rarely succeed. Going into your freelancing adventure thinking it all be easy, not require much work and that you can do as you want at all times and still make money, is wrong. Not only do you have to work hard and be disciplined, but you have to evaluate yourself and make sure to do the best you can.

9. Being Too Hard On Yourself

As important as not being too easy on yourself, is not being too hard on yourself. Sometimes you will have to work extra hours, maybe more often than you prefer, but remember to also reward yourself and take the time required to rest up and do other things. It’s also important to sometimes actually be satisfied with your results and give yourself a pat on the back. As long as you don’t go way over the top, some confidence will get you a long way.

10. Failing In Separating Professionalism And Friendship

This is a touchy point. In many professions a lot of people know each other both on and off work. First you need to remember to not take the feedback you get personal and separate the person you are at work from who you are the rest of the time. Going into new work relations, it’s also important to always act professional. Don’t talk to clients about other clients, be aware of the language you are using and don’t mix work and leisure. If you fail on this point you may find yourself involved in complicated relationships and not knowing how to solve things properly. Maybe some clients will become your friends, but remember to separate the roles clearly, or you will be in trouble.

10 Tips to Create a Motivating Working Environment at Home is a post from: Smashing Share | Web Resources, Design Inspiration, Freebies and Tutorials

Making the decision to leave the office and work from home is a lifestyle choice more and more people are making today. No matter what line of work you are in, it’s essential that you arrange your working environment to maximize motivation and productivity. Whatever your budget or space restrictions, there are many simple and effective methods for establishing a stimulating and rewarding workspace.

1. Separate Work and Domestic Life

When working at home its important to separate your domestic life from your work, by creating both mental and physical boundaries. Working on a laptop sat at the kitchen table or even in bed may seem like attractive scenarios, but the best way to create a motivating and productive environment is to have a dedicated workspace. Ideally this will be a separate room in the home converted into a study or studio. In houses with less space, set aside an area of another room, the sitting room for instance, and create a space assigned specifically for work.

2. Ergonomically Arrange Your Workspace

It’s the place where you’re going to spend a considerable amount of time, so it’s essential that your desk and chair are comfortable and ergonomic. Make sure your monitor, keyboard, mouse or laptop are positioned at the right height and angle so that you aren’t hunched awkwardly. Give yourself ample legroom and take regular breaks to stretch your legs. An ergonomically designed office chair is a great investment, ensuring that you can concentrate on your work and avoid future back problems.

3. De-Clutter Your Workspace

A clutter-free workspace helps a clutter-free mind. Take a minimalist approach to your desk by removing unnecessary jumble and trinkets, piles of books, letters, and unwashed mugs. Untangle wires and cables and hide them away as far as possible. Keeping your space clean and tidy can promote an efficient approach to your daily work.

4. Use a Second Monitor

A second monitor can improve a workspace’s organization. When working on a project you sometimes find yourself with many windows open and at times it becomes confusing; it’s useful to have an extra monitor to keep related documents and websites open while your ‘main’ monitor is dedicated to real-time work.

5. Add Some Visual Stimulation

Visual stimulation such as posters and paintings can help inspire and motivate. If possible position your desk near a window so when the eyes tire of the computer screen you can gaze at the sky and regain your thoughts.

6. Carefully Light and Colour Your Workspace

It is proven that the colours can greatly influence mood, so carefully create a colour scheme in your workspace to enhance productivity. The quality of light also directly modifies your mindset, so make maximum use of natural light and choose soft, warm coloured light bulbs for a pleasant ambience.

7. Use a Whiteboard and Calendar

A whiteboard, or even a good old-fashioned blackboard, is great way to jot down ideas when brainstorming, work out plans and make notes for future reference. While it’s likely you will make use of digital calendars and personal organizers, a paper calendar on the wall helps with mapping a work schedule and keeping track of deadlines.

8. Get Some Plants

The addition of some plants can notably improve your working environment. A little greenery is aesthetically pleasing, freshens the air, and the occasional watering and pruning proves a welcome distraction from the pressures of work.

9. Listen to Music

Background music can influence your mood so attach some speakers to your computer or install a sound system in your workspace. Choose music or radio to suit the project you are working on and heighten your creativity.

10. Add a Couch or Relaxation Space

It’s important to take breaks during the working day, so set up a relaxation area or couch away from the desk where you can unwind and take your mind off work for some time. Even better, get out of the house and take a walk, when you return you are sure to appreciate the inspiring and productive working environment that you have created within your home.

Have you ever thought what happen if you lose your job tomorrow? Or your company closes due to some reason? The situation could be anything. Many faced this problem in last few months. What should be your option to handle this situation? Do you know about Freelance Work Websites and Resources where you could survive in this situation?

Today I am gonna share Freelance Work Websites and Freelance Resources with SmashingShare readers, which could benefit when the time goes wrong. Also I am gonna share my latest experience here with you people about freelancing.

!! Recession !!

Yes recession hit hard the booming city “Dubai” (where I live and work) and my company (where i used to work 9 to 6) was also affected by this. I lost my job in September 2008.

How I survived in Recession?

I never knew about Freelance Work Websites and Resources before September 2008. I came to know about 99designs through one of my friend. After losing my job, dedicated myself to this great Freelance Work Marketplace. I never knew this would help me like hell. I won 15 contest on 99designs in just 7 months only and there was also some big amount prizes included in this list. You can see my profile here on 99designs. I was able to survive in such an expensive city (Dubai) without any job for seven to eight months. Thanks to God and 99designs

There are a lot of other Freelance Work Websites and Resources but never tried any of them excpet 99designs and CrowdSpring.

I would suggest all designers (specially who are new to this niche) to experiement 99designs once. I have enjoyed been there and had good experience. If you have passion and creativity, you would never be disappointed.
